Discover Tabernas: Europe’s Only Desert

Where van life meets the Wild West

There’s something magical about desert landscapes - vast, untamed beauty. Dramatic vistas. Perfect sunrises and sunsets, followed by quiet nights under endless stars. And in Europe, there’s only one place where you can truly experience it.

Welcome to Tabernas, Spain’s very own desert and slice of the Wild West. Yee-ha! (sorry)

This destination feels like a world away from the country's typical Med vibes of sand, scenery and sangria. Located in the Almería province of southeastern Andalusia, Tabernas is not just a place - it's a mood, a film set, and for van lifers, a perfect hidden gem.

🤠 Personal insight: Driving into Tabernas feels like you've accidentally stumbled onto the set of a Western film. Spain has latched onto this with several attractions to visit, such as cowboy shows, saloons, and even real film sets where you can channel your inner outlaw. Of course, you won't catch me engaging in such touristy hype. I just played the theme tune from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly from the shadows😉

Here are four reasons why Tabernas is your perfect desert adventure and van life destination

1) Europe's Only Desert

Tabernas is no ordinary landscape. Spanning 280 square kilometres and characterized by its arid climate, rugged terrain, and bizarre rock formations, this place has an almost otherworldly feel.

Rolling hills sculpted by the wind, unique rocks, cracked riverbeds and ramblas. Photographers and nature lovers adore Tabernas for its dramatic light and shadow play. You will not be disappointed.

2) A Cinematic Wonderland

Tabernas holds a special place in the hearts of film buffs around the world. During the 1960s and 1970s, this desert served as the backdrop for numerous iconic spaghetti westerns, including classics like A Fistful of Dollars and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The legacy of these films lives on in the form of themed attractions such as Mini Hollywood (Oasys) and Fort Bravo, where visitors can step back in time to the Wild West, complete with cowboy shows, saloons, and even film sets.

🐫 Did you know? Lawrence of Arabia (one of my all-time favourite films!) was also shot here. You can even visit the so-called "Lawrence of Arabia Oasis," where Peter O’Toole and Omar Sharif plotted their cinematic journey to Aqaba. It’s a surreal experience to stand in a place that once transported moviegoers to the 'Arabian' desert.

3) Unbeatable Parking

Hard to beat this dashboard view 😍

If you’re a van lifer looking for the ultimate boondocking spot, Tabernas delivers. While you won’t find facilities (no toilets, no water, no frills), what you will get is an epic view, complete solitude, and one of the best sunset-to-sunrise transitions you’ll ever witness.

I parked facing west at this panoramic spot, watching the sun melt into the desert mountains in a blaze of orange and pink. Then, as darkness settled, the sky exploded with stars.

And sunrise? Just as spectacular. The eastern skyline glowed in soft pink and gold, gradually revealing the desert’s intricate details. A magical 12-hour show, completely free of charge!

🚚 Bear in mind: This is true off-grid camping. No water points, no showers, no loos. If you’re self-contained, you’ll love the peace and quiet. And as always, leave no trace - let’s keep this stunning spot available for future adventurers.

4) Ticks the Adventure Box

Get ready for an adventure!

Tabernas is a playground for adventurers.

Hiking trails weave through the desert, offering panoramic views and a close-up look at the surreal rock formations. Mountain bikers can take on rugged paths, while thrill-seekers can hop into a 4x4 for an off-road safari through the arid landscape. There's even horse riding for those of you cowboys!

I decided to keep two feet on the ground and explore the desert on foot. This 10km walk perfectly captures the varied and dramatic landscape of the desert. You'll see crazy tectonic rock formations, walk along the Ramblas de Tabernas and visit the famous Lawrence of Arabia oasis 👇
