Discover Biar: A Hidden Medieval Gem
Authenticity awaits
There’s just something about medieval towns that makes them so charming, right? With cobbled streets, majestic castles, and that amazing feeling of stepping back in time, it's hard not to fall in love. If you're looking to escape the tourist crowds in Spain, you’ve got to check out a hidden gem called Biar!
Nestled away in the beautiful province of Alicante, Biar is a wonderfully preserved medieval town that’s just waiting for you to explore. If you’re a fan of history, authenticity, and peaceful spots for van life, put this place on your list!
Here are four reasons why Biar is the perfect hidden treasure for your next van life adventure, road trip, or motorhome getaway:
1) It Oozes Authentic Spanish Charm
Unlike many tourist-heavy areas, Biar keeps its genuine small-town vibe. As you wander through the old town, you’ll be greeted by narrow winding streets, colourful houses, cosy little squares, and inviting cafes.
The town's Plaza de la Constitución is home to the beautiful Nuestra Señora de la Asunción Parish Church, a 15th-century church defined by its impressive plateresque door, Baroque belltower and Churrigueresque communion chapel.
If you’re lucky enough to visit during one of Biar’s local festivals, like the Moros y Cristianos, you’re in for a treat! The lively parades and historical reenactments really bring the town’s history to life.
2) There's An Iconic Castle
You can’t miss Biar Castle; it truly dominates the skyline. Climbing up to it through the town's steep 'escaleras' is totally worth the effort! This incredible fortress dates back to the 12th century and played a big role during the Christian reconquest of Spain. It's mix of Moorish and Christian architectural styles makes it super unique.
If you make the climb, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of olive groves and the stunning Sierra de Mariola in the distance. Even though the castle was closed for renovations during my visit, the hike and those views were absolutely worth it!
3) The Parking Is a Dream
For my fellow van lifers, Biar offers a lovely and quiet place to park for the night where you can recharge your resources - all for free!
The convenient parking area is centrally located and has access to electricity and water. Plus, it’s hard standing, making it perfect even when it rains, and there are plenty of recycling bins to keep the area tidy.
4) It's Compact and Convenient
Who doesn’t love having everything they need within walking distance? Biar is compact and convenient, making it ideal for a pit stop or a fun weekend exploring. You’ll find a handful of supermarkets just a short stroll from the motorhome parking, along with lots of authentic tapas bars and cafes.
When it’s time for lunch or dinner, make sure to explore the local offerings. I recommend Casa dels Dragons for a modern tapas offering set in the romantic courtyard of a beautiful building. You'll dine surrounded by plants and artwork, it's a lovely experience.
For breakfast, check out La Fasana - grab a coffee and a bocadillo at a fantastic price, then enjoy it in the lovely square next to the church. It’s the perfect way to start your day!
