Get off the tourist trail in the heart of Andalusia
Spain is a hotspot for van lifers, road trippers, and motorhome adventurers, especially in the winter months when the northern European chill drives us sun-seekers south.
From November to March, the Iberian Peninsula buzzes with campervans and motorhomes. While the Costa del Sol might feel like an overcrowded parking lot, there’s a lovely alternative waiting to be discovered.
What if you could still soak up the Spanish sun while avoiding the crowds?
Welcome to Antequera, a charming Andalusian town that somehow flies under the radar despite its jaw-dropping scenery and rich history. Just imagine a picturesque town snugly nestled among dramatic limestone peaks, where history meets modern convenience.
Located 50 kilometres north of Málaga, the town has a buzz about it, yet retains an authentic laid-back charm.
Here's four reasons why Andalusia's Antequera is your perfect escape from the tourist throngs of Spain.
1) History On Your Doorstep
There's plenty to look at in this town! It's steeped in history, stretching as far back as 3,500 BC with the prehistoric dolmens - UNESCO World Heritage burial sites older than the Egyptian pyramids.
The 11th-century Alcazaba fortress perched high above the town is also worth a visit. It holds significant historical and architectural value, blending Moorish military design with the beauty of Andalusian landscapes.
And the town centre itself has plenty of interesting architecture and plazas to stroll around and admire.
2) A Food Scene Worth Parking For
There's a heap of good quality and well-rated tapas bars and restaurants in the town, serving Andalusian classics, from crisp croquettes to berenjenas con miel (fried eggplant drizzled with honey).
As this isn't an overly touristy place, prices are reasonable for good-quality dishes. English isn't widely spoken, so brush up on the very basics!
3) A Base for Bigger Adventures
Nestled at the crossroads of Andalusia, and easily accessible from the A92 or A45, Antequera is easy to get to and the perfect base to explore nearby treasures.
Just a short drive away lies El Torcal, with its striking karst landscapes and hiking routes. You can park directly at the Visitor Centre. This requires a steep drive to the top, but you're rewarded with stunning views on the way.
And then there’s Peña de los Enamorados (Lover’s Rock), the iconic face-shaped mountain.
4) Van-Friendly Parking
Antequera has plenty of parking options, including a free motorhome site right in the centre of town. This is equipped with water disposal and refill (though no electricity).
If you prefer a quieter environment, there’s a spacious car park on the outskirts. This spot is perfect for a peaceful night, with spectacular views of the Alcazaba. If you’re lucky, you can nab a front-row park-up - imagine opening your doors to that stunning view!
Epic views from the parking and the downhill stroll into the town
I parked here and enjoyed a peaceful evening. Just keep in mind some areas may require levelling.
The town centre is only a 15-minute downhill walk, taking you past the Alcazaba and stunning vistas. Of course, the walk back is a bit of a workout, but it’s a great way to burn off all that tapas!
